Otto Addo Earns FIFA Technical Study Group Role for 2026 World Cup After Ghana Exit

Former Ghana head coach Otto Addo has reportedly been appointed to FIFA’s prestigious Technical Study Group (TSG) for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking a significant milestone in his coaching career despite his recent departure from the Black Stars.

The Technical Study Group is one of FIFA’s most influential football analysis bodies, tasked with examining tactical trends, match strategies, set-piece innovations and team performances throughout the tournament. The panel also contributes to the selection of major individual honours, including the Golden Ball, Golden Boot and other performance-based awards.

Addo’s inclusion in the elite group is a major recognition of his growing reputation within global football circles. The former Borussia Dortmund assistant coach becomes the only African manager named on the high-profile panel for the upcoming Mundial in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The 50-year-old’s appointment comes only weeks after his dismissal as Ghana head coach. Although he successfully guided the Black Stars to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a series of disappointing international friendly results reportedly led to his exit. Heavy defeats against Austria and Germany ultimately brought an end to his second spell in charge of the national team.

The FIFA Technical Study Group will operate under the guidance of legendary former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger, who currently serves as FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development. The panel will be led by FIFA Senior Football Expert Pascal Zuberbühler and Football Performance Insights lead Tom Gardner.

Addo will work alongside an impressive list of football figures, including Tobin Heath, Jürgen Klinsmann, Jayne Ludlow, Michael O’Neill, Gilberto Silva, Jon Dahl Tomasson, Paulo Wanchope, Aron Winter and Pablo Zabaleta.

The group will be supported by a specialised team of football analysts, data scientists, engineers and performance experts working across tournament hubs in Miami and Dallas, as well as an off-site analysis centre in Manchester, England.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association has turned to experienced Portuguese manager Carlos Queiroz as Addo’s successor ahead of the World Cup finals. Queiroz, who has previously managed Portugal and Iran at the World Cup, is expected to lead Ghana into a challenging Group L campaign against England, Panama and Croatia.

FIFA’s Technical Study Group has historically featured some of football’s most respected minds, producing detailed tactical reports that often shape modern coaching methods, player development and performance analysis around the world.

For Addo, the appointment represents both personal recognition and a major achievement for African coaching on the global stage. Despite his recent departure from the Black Stars, his inclusion in FIFA’s elite technical panel reinforces the high regard in which his football knowledge and tactical insight are held internationally.

Ghana are scheduled to open their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Panama on 18 June before taking on England and Croatia in their remaining group matches as they seek qualification to the knockout stages.
