President of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF), Charles Osei Assibey, has been appointed to the Governance and Oversight Commission of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) — a significant milestone for Ghanaian sports administration on the global stage.

The appointment was officially confirmed by the IWF following a competitive selection process involving nominations from various member federations. Mr. Osei Assibey, who also serves as Vice President of the Commonwealth Weightlifting Federation and Executive Board Member of the Weightlifting Federation of Africa, brings years of experience, leadership, and reform-oriented vision to the commission.

The IWF Governance and Oversight Commission plays a crucial role in ensuring transparency, integrity, and compliance within the global weightlifting community. The commission is tasked with monitoring the Federation’s adherence to ethical standards, governance principles, and anti-doping measures, especially following past reforms instituted by the IWF in response to international scrutiny.

Reacting to the appointment, Charles Osei Assibey expressed his gratitude and reaffirmed his commitment to ethical sports governance:

“This is not just a personal honour but a great moment for Ghanaian sports. It is a strong signal that the international community recognises our efforts in promoting integrity, development, and professionalism in weightlifting.”

His appointment also reflects Ghana’s growing influence in international sports governance. It comes at a time when the Ghana Weightlifting Federation is seeking to expand grassroots participation, improve athlete development programs, and enhance transparency in its operations.
