Nigerian football icon Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has praised the Super Falcons for their heroic performance in the final of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where they staged a remarkable comeback to defeat host nation Morocco and lift their 10th continental title.

The highly anticipated final, played at the packed Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, ended in dramatic fashion as Nigeria overturned a first-half deficit to claim a 3-2 victory. The win not only reasserts Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football but also silenced the home crowd and capped off a flawless campaign for the West African giants.

Speaking in the aftermath of the historic win, Jay-Jay Okocha commended the resilience and fighting spirit displayed by the Super Falcons.

🗣️ “The Super Falcons achieved the unthinkable yesterday,” Okocha said. “Their victory was thoroughly deserved – they fought valiantly from start to finish. The Moroccan side became complacent far too early, believing the match was already in their hands. They seemed to forget that Nigerian women do not give up so easily. Congratulations to our ladies for bringing the trophy back home!”

Okocha, who captained the Super Eagles during his illustrious career, emphasised the significance of the win, especially against a technically gifted Moroccan team that had the advantage of home support and were widely tipped to claim their first title.

The Super Falcons, led by captain Onome Ebi and coached by Randy Waldrum, have now won the tournament more times than any other nation. Their triumph in Morocco marks their first WAFCON title since 2018, having been denied in 2022 by South Africa in the semi-finals.

Star performances from Asisat Oshoala, Rasheedat Ajibade, and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie were instrumental throughout the tournament, with Nnadozie producing a string of crucial saves in the final to keep Nigeria in the game.

The victory not only secures continental glory but also guarantees Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers as Africa’s top seed.

The nation has since erupted in celebration, with messages of congratulations pouring in from across the world, highlighting the enduring legacy and unyielding spirit of the Super Falcons.
