Former Ghana national team manager, Charles Kwablan (CK) Akonnor, has been officially appointed as the new head coach of Kenyan Premier League champions, Gor Mahia. The appointment marks a significant step in Akonnor’s coaching career as he takes charge of East Africa’s most successful football club.
Akonnor, who previously managed the Ghana senior national team (Black Stars) brings a wealth of experience to the K’Ogalo bench. He has also had successful spells with several top Ghanaian clubs including Asante Kotoko, Accra Hearts of Oak, Dreams FC, and AshantiGold SC, guiding Kotoko to the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup in 2018.
Joining him in Nairobi are two trusted members of his backroom staff — Bismark Cobi Mensah, who has been named as assistant coach, and former Black Stars goalkeepers’ trainer Ben Owu, who takes up the role of goalkeepers’ coach.
The trio are expected to lead Gor Mahia’s preparations for the upcoming season, which includes defending their league title and representing Kenya in the CAF Champions League.
Gor Mahia officials have expressed confidence in Akonnor’s pedigree, citing his international exposure and developmental approach to coaching as key to the club’s long-term ambitions.
Akonnor is expected to begin work with the squad ahead of pre-season training.
