Hearts of Oak began their 2025 GHALCA Top 4 tournament campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Heart of Lions on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. The tournament, originally scheduled to take place at the Baba Yara Stadium and at point at the Accra Sports, was relocated to the University of Ghana Stadium due to ongoing renovation works. The match was closely contested, with both teams creating several chances to break the deadlock.

Despite the aggressive play and numerous opportunities, only a single goal was scored. The crucial moment came in the 38th minute when Heart of Lions’ defender Ebenezer Abban inadvertently scored an own goal following a well-executed free-kick from Hearts of Oak’s Ransford Mensah.

The own goal proved to be the match-winner as Hearts of Oak held on to their narrow lead until the final whistle. The defensive resilience and composure shown by Hearts of Oak in the latter stages helped them maintain the clean sheet and secure all three points. The victory provides a positive platform for Hearts of Oak as the tournament progresses.

Following their win, Hearts of Oak will now shift their focus to their upcoming fixture against Bibiani Gold Stars, scheduled for Friday, August 22. Meanwhile, Heart of Lions will look to bounce back when they face Asante Kotoko in their next game. Both teams remain in contention as the tournament moves forward to determine the ultimate champion.
