Djiku’s scrapy Strike Seals Vital Win as Ghana Stay Top of Group I

World Cup (Q): Ghana grind out tough victory over Mali in Accra

Ghana’s Black Stars remain firmly in the driver’s seat in Group I from 2026 World Cup qualifying after Monday evening’s hard fought 1-0 victory over Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Ghana defender Alexander Djiku bundled in at the far post after Mali goalkeeper Djigui Diarra misplayed Jordan Ayew’s corner kick in the 49th minute, a moment that made all the difference in a crucial clash.

It was an even clash throughout with Mali desperately needing a victory away from home to keep their fading World Cup hopes alive. After Djiku opened the scoring, however, the Ghanaian defense put in an excellent shift to limit Les Aigles to hopeful crosses and long range efforts that caused little trouble for Black Stars keeper Benjamin Asare.

After a disappointing draw at Chad that gave Group I’s bottom side their first point, Ghana successfully bounced back to maintain a three-point lead. The Black Stars finish their campaign in October with a clash against Central African Republic before closing out at home against Comoros.

Mali still can secure the runner-up position and qualification for the playoff but the Eagles will need to win at Chad and at home against Madagascar, who won earlier on Monday against Central African Republic.

Group I Table (8 matches played)

Ghana- 19 points

Madagascar- 16 points

Comoros- 15 points

Mali- 12 points

Central African Republic- 5 points

Chad- 1 point
