Veteran Sports Journalist Gouda Abdernour speaks to Hassan Abed.
To begin with, how do you view Egypt’s hosting of the U-20 African Volleyball Championship?
Egypt has become the number one destination in Africa for hosting major sporting events, thanks to the unlimited support of the political leadership and the country’s advanced sports infrastructure. These factors have enabled us to organize African, Arab, and global championships with great efficiency.
What efforts is the organizing committee making to ensure the tournament’s success?
The organizing committee, chaired by media figure Mona Abdel Karim, is in constant session to guarantee that the championship presents the best possible image of Egypt at both the continental and international levels. This time, the organization focuses on every detail—from welcoming the delegations to the closing ceremony.
Who do you credit for this organizational success?
First and foremost, I would like to thank President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, the primary supporter of Egyptian sports. The construction boom that Egypt has witnessed over the past seven years is the main reason we are capable of hosting events of this magnitude. I also highly appreciate the continuous support of Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, Minister of Youth and Sports, as well as the efforts of the Egyptian Volleyball Federation’s board, led by Eng. Yasser Qamar.
What about the participating teams and the tournament system?
The championship is being held at one of Egypt’s most modern indoor halls, with eight nations taking part. The top teams from each group qualify for the quarterfinals, then the semifinals, and finally the championship match. This edition also serves as a direct qualifier for the 2026 World Championship.
How did the Egyptian team prepare for such an important tournament?
The federation provided all necessary resources to the coaching staff, led by Ahmed Samir. We organized a closed training camp in Alexandria and played several strong preparatory matches. The squad includes promising talents: some players who competed in the U-21 World Championship in China, alongside others from the U-20 national team that won the Arab Championship. This mix gives us great optimism.
What is your assessment of the first impressions from the participating delegations?
The delegations expressed their admiration from the very moment they arrived. The organization is impressive, and the services provided are top-notch. This truly reflects the real image of Egypt as a nation capable of hosting major championships.
Any final words for the Egyptian fans?
I promise them that the national team will deliver a performance worthy of Egypt’s name and achieve positive results that will add to the record of Egyptian volleyball achievements.
