Asante Kotoko defender Shayibu Abubakar has suffered a major setback after sustaining a serious knee injury during the team’s morning training session on Wednesday.
The incident occurred following a collision with teammate Morifing Donzo during a challenge that left the young full-back in visible pain. The club’s medical team responded swiftly, providing immediate on-field treatment before transferring him to Accra for further assessment.
The 23-year-old had only recently returned to full fitness after recovering from a hamstring injury that had ruled him out for several weeks earlier in the season.
A club statement described the injury as “unfortunate” and expressed full support for the player during his recovery. Abubakar, regarded as one of Kotoko’s most promising young defenders, is expected to travel to Kumasi to consult a specialist for further evaluation and to determine the next steps in his rehabilitation.
