Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Endorses Inclusion of Local Players in National Squad
The Minister for Government Communications, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has thrown his full support behind the inclusion of home-based players in Ghana’s national football squad, describing the move as both strategic and beneficial to the development of the local game.
Speaking to Joy Sports, the Minister emphasised the importance of recognising and rewarding players from the Ghana Premier League who have consistently demonstrated exceptional performance throughout the season.
“At the last World Cup, we had local players in the team, and both the players and their clubs benefited immensely from the experience and exposure,” he noted. “I see no reason why we cannot replicate that success this time around.”
He further argued that with a 26-man squad, there is enough room to accommodate a few standout local talents without compromising the team’s overall competitiveness.
“It’s a 26-man squad — not everyone gets the chance to play. There are always a few who may never even touch the ball. So why not make use of the opportunity to include the best-performing players from our domestic league?” he remarked.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu highlighted that beyond national pride, the inclusion of local players would boost the morale of clubs and encourage healthy competition in the Ghana Premier League. He added that such recognition would also motivate young players to work harder, knowing that their efforts could earn them a place in the national team.
“At the same time, our local clubs will gain financially and in reputation from this arrangement, making it a win-win situation for all involved. I fully support this initiative,” he affirmed.
The Minister’s comments come amid renewed calls from sports analysts and football fans for a more balanced national team selection process that values homegrown talent alongside foreign-based professionals.
