JUST IN: Kurt Okraku Confirms Intention to Seek Third Term as GFA President

The President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, has officially confirmed his intention to seek a third term in office, according to information exclusively gathered by Ghanaian journalist Kolog Bonaventure.

Okraku, who has led Ghana’s football governing body since 2019, is understood to have informed members of the Executive Council (ExCo) and Regional Football Association chairmen of his decision ahead of the next presidential elections scheduled for 2027.

The move follows constitutional amendments approved by the GFA Congress, which extended the maximum tenure for the association’s president from two terms to three. Under the revised statutes introduced after the 2019 reforms led by Kofi Amoah, the GFA President can now serve up to three four-year terms, amounting to a possible 12 years in office.

Article 37 of the previous statutes had limited elected officials — including the GFA President, Executive Council members, and Regional and District FA chairmen — to two terms. However, the amendment has now opened the door for Okraku to remain at the helm beyond 2027.

The former chairman of the MTN FA Cup Committee first assumed office in September 2019 after emerging victorious in a fiercely contested election held at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Osu. He defeated notable contenders including Nana Yaw Amponsah, Fred Pappoe, George Afriyie and Clinton Annan.

In 2023, Okraku secured re-election unopposed in Tamale despite several legal challenges and court injunctions surrounding the electoral process.

Sources within the association have now disclosed that the current GFA boss is hopeful of going into the 2027 elections without opposition once again, as he seeks to continue his administration’s agenda for Ghana football.

Okraku’s tenure has seen significant reforms across domestic football, women’s football, grassroots development and infrastructure, although his administration has also faced criticism over the performance of the national teams and other governance-related concerns.

With his third-term ambition now confirmed, attention is expected to shift towards whether any strong contenders will emerge to challenge his leadership ahead of the next GFA elections.
