Ghana’s para-athletes have departed from Accra to Stellenbosch, South Africa, to take part in the 2025 edition of the Commonwealth Games Federation’s GAPS Program, scheduled from 19th to 26th July.

The GAPS Program—an acronym for Gather, Adjust, Prepare, Sustain—is a key component of preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. An initiative of Commonwealth Sport, the program is designed to support the development of para-athletes and coaches by providing world-class training, resources, and mentorship opportunities.

This year’s Ghanaian contingent features some of the nation’s most accomplished and promising para-athletes.

Among them is Zinabu Issah, a standout competitor in the F57 women’s discus throw. Zinabu made national headlines in April 2025 after winning gold at the WPA Marrakech Grand Prix in Morocco.

She is joined by Haruna Tahiru, a seasoned athlete who has represented Ghana since 2017 in Para Powerlifting (107kg+) and Arm Wrestling, winning multiple medals both locally and on the international stage.

Guiding the athletes are two experienced coaches, Prince Nyarko and Obeng Yaw Patrick, who will oversee the intensive one-week training camp in Stellenbosch.

Ghana’s participation in the GAPS Program has been made possible through the support of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), a proud member of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). The collaboration further strengthens the long-standing relationship between the GOC and NPC Ghana, reinforcing their shared commitment to the growth and success of para-sports in Ghana—particularly in view of the medal prospects for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Ghana’s inclusion in this prestigious development program is a significant step toward empowering athletes with disabilities and elevating their performance on the global stage.
