Accra Great Olympics have taken a bold step towards reclaiming their place in Ghana’s top-flight football by appointing Sulley Amadu as head coach on a two-year deal, signalling a new era of ambition under a revamped technical and management structure.
The appointment signals a fresh start and a serious promotion charge for the new Olympics leadership, betting on a coach who has proven he can win promotion battles and has already mastered the rugged terrain of Division One football.
The 42-year-old tactician, who boasts a CAF Licence B certificate, officially signed his contract yesterday at the club’s head office on Ajjuma Crescent in Accra’s South Industrial Area.
The ceremony was witnessed by top club officials, including newly appointed General Manager, Eric Alagidede, who signed on behalf of the club, with Olympics’ Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Executive Director, Kudjoe Fianoo, and the coach’s brother and manager, Hamid Safiyanu Abubakar, endorsing the contract as witnesses.
With a proven track record in the Access Bank Division One League, Amadu is no stranger to the promotion grind. He famously led Kpando Heart of Lions back to the Ghana Premier League during a five-year stint and last season guided Okwawu United to a respectable third-place finish in Zone Three, ironically ahead of Olympics, who ended in a disappointing ninth.
Proven track record
His appointment has been described by the club’s hierarchy as a perfect fit for the task at hand.
At the ceremony, Mr Fianoo said the club settled on the ambitious coach because of his deep knowledge of the division and proven track record of promotion success.
“He is a very ambitious young coach who understands the terrain.
We believe he’s the right person to lead us back to where we belong,” the Olympics chief noted.
Mr Fianoo tasked Amadu with enforcing discipline within the playing body while treating players with respect and camaraderie to win their trust and commitment, a blend he described as vital for team success.
The new GM also echoed similar sentiments, promising the coach full backing from the club’s leadership to build a winning team capable of securing promotion.
“The management will provide the necessary support to make this project a success,” he said.
“We are committed to working together to get this club back into the Premier League.”
After signing the deal, Coach Amadu expressed excitement at joining the ‘Wonder Club’, describing his new role as a dream opportunity.
“Great Olympics is one of the biggest clubs in Ghana with a rich history. I am here to lead a project that will bring us back to the Premier League where we truly belong,” he said, adding, “But I need players with strong character, discipline, and a winning mentality.
We want to compete from day one, and that starts with 100 per cent commitment on and off the pitch.”
Shortly after the unveiling, the gaffer hit the ground running by leading his first training session yesterday afternoon at the McDan La Town Park to begin preparations for the new
season.Also present at the unveiling ceremony were the club’s Communications Manager, Maurice Quansah, and leaders of the Interim National Executive Committee of the Olympics Supporters Union, led by Joseph Boye, demonstrating a united front as the ‘Wonder Club’ embarks on its Ghana Premier League return journey two seasons after suffering relegation.
