French Ligue 1 side Toulouse FC have confirmed that Ghanaian midfielder Francis Abu will miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup after sustaining a broken leg during international duty.

The highly-rated midfielder suffered the injury in a fierce challenge during Ghana’s recent international friendly, forcing him to be stretchered off the pitch. Subsequent medical assessments by Toulouse FC revealed that the extent of the damage will require a long period of recovery, ruling him out of next year’s global tournament.

The club, in an official statement issued on Thursday, expressed deep disappointment over the situation, noting that Abu has been one of their most consistent performers this season.

“This is a huge blow for both the player and the team. Francis has been exceptional for us, and it is unfortunate that he will not be able to represent his country at the World Cup. We wish him a full and speedy recovery,” the statement read.

The Ghana Football Association is also expected to issue an update on the player’s condition and the implications for the Black Stars’ preparation for the tournament.

Abu, who has been widely regarded as one of Ghana’s brightest midfield prospects, will now begin an extensive rehabilitation programme under the supervision of Toulouse FC’s medical team.

His absence is expected to have a significant impact on Ghana’s midfield options as the Black Stars prepare for their return to the world stage in 2026.
