Senegal are the newly crowned champions of the Championship of Africa Nations (CHAN) after beating host Algeria in the finals of the tournament at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers.

The game had to travel to penalty shootouts after extra time in a game which ended barren in 120 minutes for the West African side to annex the trophy.

Senegal were the strong side in the first half an hour mark of the game producing all the glaring chances but failed to convert any of their final balls.

Captain Abdellaoiu had to stretch to have a final touch to a dangerous cross sent in from the left flanks by Ndiaye on the 24th minutes for a Senegal corner kick to save the blushes of the Desert Foxes.

It became genuinely difficult for any of the sides to dominate possession in the game just before half time having both sides struggling to find way through the backline of their opponents.

In the second half, with extra efforts by both sides, nothing was gotten after 90 minutes of football allowing an additional 30 minutes to be played to find a winner.

During the extra time, Algeria almost found the net through Zineddine Belaid but his effort went up begging on the centurion minutes.

Senegal went into the penalty shootouts well composed and determined, having in mind what happened in Cameroon in February 2022 during the AFCON where they beat Egypt from the spots to win their maiden AFCON title.

Coach Pape Thiaw’s Senegal won by 5-4 on penalties to shock Algeria in front of their crowd to win their first CHAN Tournament on its 7th edition.
