Former GAA Chairman Leads Drive to Mobilise Corporate Support to Boost Athletics Attendance in Ghana

Former Chairman of the Ghana Athletics Association and renowned economist, George Haldane-Lutterodt, has disclosed that he has distributed the official athletics competition programme to eight major organisations in a bid to boost attendance at ongoing track and field events.

According to him, the move is part of a wider effort to encourage corporate and institutional support for athletics and to ensure strong spectator turnout at the championships currently being staged in Accra. He explained that the initiative is aimed at mobilising employees from both public and private sector bodies to attend the events during the afternoon sessions.

He added that several heads of the organisations he engaged with have already given assurances that they will begin releasing staff from tomorrow to support the competition on rotational basis.

Speaking with conviction about the broader objective, he indicated that the effort forms part of attempts by stakeholders to restore pride and dignity to Ghanaian athletics, which has in recent years faced challenges relating to visibility, funding, and public engagement.

He further suggested that the initiative is not a one-off intervention but part of a sustained drive to reconnect the sport with the general public and improve attendance at major competitions, including the ongoing African Senior Athletics Championships.

He concluded by emphasising that coordinated support from institutions, stakeholders, and the public will be essential in rebuilding a vibrant athletics culture in Ghana.
