Nigeria Unveil Star-Studded Squad for African Athletics Championships in Accra

Nigeria have announced a formidable squad for the 2026 CAA Senior African Athletics Championships in Accra, with several of the continent’s biggest athletics stars set to compete in Ghana.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has named a strong contingent led by world-renowned sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan, alongside shot put powerhouse Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, sprint sensation Rosemary Chukwuma and hammer throw specialist Sade Olatoye.

The Nigerian team is expected to be among the strongest at the continental showpiece, with athletes selected across sprints, relays, middle-distance races, jumps and field events.

Former world record holder Amusan headlines the women’s 100m hurdles squad and will be aiming to reaffirm her dominance on the African stage after years of competing at the highest level globally. Chukwuma, one of Nigeria’s fastest female sprinters, has also been included for the women’s 100m and 4x100m relay events.

In the field events, Enekwechi will spearhead Nigeria’s medal ambitions in the men’s shot put, while Olatoye’s inclusion strengthens the country’s hopes in the women’s hammer throw competition.

Nigeria have also assembled an impressive relay pool featuring the likes of Favour Ashe, Enoch Adegoke and Patience Okon-George, underlining the nation’s intent to challenge strongly for medals in both the men’s and women’s relay events.

The championships in Accra are expected to attract many of Africa’s elite athletes, with host nation Ghana preparing to welcome thousands of competitors and officials for one of the continent’s biggest sporting events.

With a blend of experienced international stars and emerging talents, Nigeria will head into the competition as one of the favourites to dominate the medal table.
