Young Ghanaian pugilist Joseph Commey has been tipped as a future world-beater with the potential to restore the nation’s prominence on the global boxing stage.

Affectionately known as ‘Jaguar’ by his fans, the 22-year-old has already made his mark, securing a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and a gold medal at the 2023 African Games.

Veteran sports journalist Ekow Asmah believes Commey possesses all the qualities to elevate Ghana’s name in world boxing. However, he expressed concern over whether this potential will be realised, citing the lack of financial backing among local managers and their absence from major international conventions.

He emphasised that Commey needs proper technical guidance and career support if he is to become a global superstar.

Currently unbeaten in his professional career, Commey is set to contest the Ghana National Lightweight Championship against the experienced Victor Kuwornu on Saturday, 23 August, at the Bukom Boxing Arena. The highly anticipated bout is being promoted by Bishop Boxing Promotions in collaboration with the Wisdom Boxing Gym.

Speaking confidently ahead of the fight, Commey promised his fans victory but admitted he would not underestimate his older opponent.

“I give my opponent respect, but in the ring it is business – and I have to finish it,” he told Yours Truly at the Gamebox Gym in Labone.
