The Acting President of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), Roger Barnor, has dismissed reports suggesting that the National Sports Authority (NSA) has imposed a suspension on boxing activities in the country.
Speaking in response to growing public speculation, Mr Barnor clarified that the GBA has not received any official communication from the NSA regarding a ban. He emphasised that the Authority remains committed to upholding the highest standards of safety and professionalism within the sport.
“We have not been officially informed by the NSA of any ban on boxing. Until such a directive is formally communicated, we will continue to observe all laid-down procedures and protocols before sanctioning bouts,” Mr Barnor stated.
The development comes amidst heightened debate over safety regulations in Ghanaian boxing, following recent tragic incidents in the sport that have raised questions about medical preparedness and oversight. The NSA, under the leadership of Mr Charles Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, is yet to issue a definitive statement clarifying its stance on the matter.
Meanwhile, the GBA has reassured promoters, boxers and fans that all scheduled events will proceed as planned, provided the necessary medical checks, licensing procedures and safety measures are strictly adhered to.
This clarification aims to ease growing uncertainty within Ghana’s boxing fraternity, which continues to grapple with the balance between promoting the sport and safeguarding athletes’ welfare.
